(With thanks to ‘The Strip Podcast’ for the clipping)
I have had corrections written for stories I’ve penned. I’ve written corrections for stories reporters have done. But I have never been involved with ANYTHING of this magnitude. If an intern wrote this story, oh God would I want to buy them a drink and give them a hug. But it’s not an intern.
Just click on and read the whole thing, then take a deep breath and begin chuckling and shaking your head:
Wow. That was good, huh?
I’ll leave it to The Strip Podcast to elaborate, because they’re in the area and are familiar with both the paper and reporter responsible.
I was surprised to learn that an experienced reporter was apparently behind this. Some of the mistakes mentioned here … hey, they happen. Even the fact that the story was apparently written to back up a preestablished belief — I’ve seen editors hand out stories like that all the time.
But … the difference between incident reports and actual crimes is something I’d expect an intern fresh from J-School to be aware of. Taking anonymous comments from websites is also just … well, retarded.
Anyway, we all make mistakes. Some of our mistakes make other people’s days. And I was having a bad one until I read this. Thanks, guys!
