Osama = Overrated!

(Somewhere, where sports talk radio meets CIA insiders)

That bin Laden: He’s a one-season wonder.

You know, I just don’t understand the fans’ infatuation with this Osama guy. It’s kinda like, he’s just overrated now, y’know what I mean?

I mean, he’s got a new tape out, supposedly. Ohhh, a tape! That’s production! Another year where he talks a big game and has nothing to back it up. He’s making a living off of one good season. I mean, sure, he had some decent minor league numbers, and he was ranked as one of the top prospects as far back as 1999.

So he had a lot of buzz. He was hyped. The man had upside. Some crazy potential, even. But what’s potential? Potential is Latin for “hasn’t done a damn thing yet.” You don’t get credit for what you’re predicted to do. Ask Alexander Daigle or Ryan Leaf about potential.

But Osama? For sure, he had more than just some potential, he had one good season in the big leagues. Seems like those are the only highlights we ever see of the guy. He hasn’t made Sportscentre in half a decade. Elite players just don’t have long droughts like that. They get out and make things happen. If the game’s not coming to them, they go to the game.

I just don’t know if Osama is really giving 110% these days….

Granted, he put up some huge numbers in that one campaign, but he’s still dining out on that big season six years later. But stop and look at the stats for a minute: What has this guy done lately?

I mean, if you’re Al-Qaeda, you gotta look at your bottom line for a second. The guy is flat-out old by now, his productivity has been slipping for a long time now. You have to take a look at your roster and evaluate your young talent. You can’t keep living in the past. Wayne Gretzky, Joe Montana, Larry Bird … these guys were some of the greatest of all time, but there comes a time when the spirit is willing but the flesh is too weak to continue the fight.

Which brings me to bin Laden’s health status. Let’s face it: The guy is injury prone. Chronic kidney failure?! Are you kidding me?! That’s not something you just rehab in the gym. That’s why it’s “chronic”, people! He’s done. Washed up.

It’s been six years since his last good year. Six years that he’s gotten fat just sitting back in his cave and watching his teammates struggle without him. Six years of sitting on the team’s payroll without really lifting a finger. He’s just lucky there’s no salary cap in the collective bargaining agreement. He would have been cut three years ago!

Sure, he’s good with PR; he talks to the community and rallies spirits when the organization is going through a rough patch … but there’s no replacement for performance in this game.

Look, Sergei Fedorov has spent more than ten years living off his 1994 Hart trophy. Jim Carey is at home right now, wondering how he won the Vezina. One good season is basically the reason Lamond Murray has any money in his bank account at all. Bin Laden is no different from these guys. He was a talented rookie once, he put it all together for a brief period and somehow he’s still considered one of the greats

Nope. Great players produce consistently. They don’t rack up some numbers and then fall back asleep. They go to bed, get up, and come back hungry for more.

I mean, nobody questions the guy’s desire, but if the results aren’t there, then they just ain’t there, and maybe it’s time for everyone to just move on.

If they can’t find anybody dumb enough to swap a draft pick for him, they should just cut his ass. The organization needs to rebuild. If they can’t sign a high-profile free agent this off-season, they’re better off just cutting ties with the old guard and rebuilding through the draft. The infidels aren’t going to kill themselves while Osama sits around, counts his money and talks about the good ol’ days.

Drafting and recruitment. That’s how you build a dynasty.
